New Mexico Missile Range - Lockheed Martin's White Sands Missile Range Facility supports missile and launch pad tests for a variety of missile and fire control programs.

Located at the US Army's White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in south-central New Mexico, the Lockheed Martin WSMR facility has supported product testing for the Missiles and Fire Control (MFC) business since 1964.

The MFC programs supported by the WSMR facility include missiles such as the Tactical Missile System (TACMS), Unit Missile Guided Multiple Launch Missile System (GMLRS), and anti-aircraft attack missiles. Patriot-3 Advanced Capability Destroyer (PAC-3), Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS) and launchers such as M270A1 Multiple Launch Missile System (MLRS) and Artillery Missile System high mobility (HIMARS).

About 60 members of the WSMR team perform launch operations, telemetry installation and flight termination of the rocket in test objects and test data collection. The team also supports ground testing, including radar-seeking lines, environmental testing and system-level mobility, as well as launch vehicle maintenance, modification and repair.

In November 2012, the WSMR facility was one of eleven MFC sites selected as recipients of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for outstanding performance and quality achievement.

Environment, Safety and Health Policy The Missile and Fire Control Environment, Safety and Health (ESH) policy is to operate our facilities in a regulatory, responsible manner, committed to protecting the environment and surrounding communities, committed to preventing pollution and preventing occupational injuries and illness, conservation of natural resources and safe and healthy workplaces for employees, contractors and guests. The policy requires employees to:

U.S.A. government regulations require unaccompanied visitors to our WSMR facility to complete an unexploded ordnance training course provided by the US Army.

WHITE SANDS MISSION SCOPE, N.M. (Jan. 17, 2013) -- The United States dedicated its largest solar array at the White Sands Rocket School on Jan. 16 in a ceremony led by Brig. General Gwen Bingham, commander of White Sands, with Katherine Hammack, assistant secretary for facilities, energy and environment.

"I came here about four months ago to talk about how White Sands is a national treasure, and now we can feel proud that we're really on the side of the environment," Bingham said. "Doing things like this takes passion. I'm just excited for the journey ahead."

Developed in collaboration with the US Technical and Support Center in Huntsville, Ala., Siemens Government Technologies, Inc. and Bostonia, the more than 4 megawatt White Sands Missile Range solar system will generate about 10 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity. annually and provides an estimated annual savings of $930,000.

Complemented by a 375 kW solar garage, the solar plant at White Sands will provide approximately 10% of the total energy used by the installation and reduce carbon emissions by 7,400 tonnes per year. With Solaria's proprietary technology, the 4.1 MW ground-mounted tracking system is also the world's largest low-concentration solar installation.

"This is an exciting project for the United States," said Garrison Commander Col. Leo Pullar. "A sunny location like New Mexico provides an ideal location for solar energy. This project illustrates America's commitment to going green, with our focus on running on zero energy and doing what we can to help protect the environment."

"We are thrilled to dedicate this important photovoltaic installation," said Will Irby, program director for the Huntsville Center. "We are incredibly grateful to the entire team, including personnel from White Sands Rocket School, Huntsville Center, Siemens, their subcontractors Solaria Corporation and Bostonia, working under the direction of Brigadier General Gwen. Bingham and Colonel Leo Pullar. Everyone did an outstanding job of make this project a reality.”

"Siemens is committed to helping the Department of Defense achieve unprecedented levels of energy efficiency, security and independence," said Judy Marks, president and CEO of Siemens Government Technologies, Inc. not only in terms of financial gain, but also for the sake of maintaining mission readiness and preserving opportunities for the future'.

"The Department of Defense is deploying renewable energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. This solar energy system demonstrates the U.S. government's goal of increasing security through independence. Energy deployment can be both economically and practically achievable when the public and private sectors work together," said Dan Shugar , CEO of Solaria Corporation.

Construction of the solar facility began in April 2012 and was completed in December 2012. The ground-mounted single-axis Solaria tracking system tracks the sun in the sky and increases energy efficiency by up to 30% compared to fixed systems. All energy generated from the project will be consumed by on-site operations.

"(As a country) we're using more energy and we have aging infrastructure, it's our responsibility to help reduce the stress and strain on these power lines, and we're working. This is in partnership with utilities. The power line ends here," Hammock said . "There is no better community support than in White Sands and New Mexico. You have so many natural resources that contribute to the future of this state."

The $16.8 million solar installation is a key component of the energy efficiency contract signed by Siemens Industry, Inc.'s Building Technology Division. Sand at the same rate they currently pay the local utility.

They will own renewable energy credits, or RECs, and use them to meet federal renewable energy mandates.

The project supports President Barack Obama's directive that federal agencies use energy efficiency performance contracts worth $2 billion in energy performance upgrades over the next year, as well as support public spending on renewable energy.
